2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Announced
The Ram 1500 is about to become the most powerful half-ton diesel pickup truck in America thanks to the introduction of a brand new engine for the 2020 model year! With this engine, the 2020 Ram 1500 will deliver the highest half-ton diesel torque output at 480 lb-ft and the highest half-ton diesel towing available, maxing out at 12,560 pounds! The Engine
The 2020 Ram 1500 will offer the third-generation of the 3.0-liter turbocharged EcoDiesel V6 that has boosted both horsepower and torque as well as superb fuel economy! This engine has also reduced noise levels, vibrations, and harshness also known as NVH. For the 2020 model year, this engine pumps out the best-in-class 480 pound-feet of torque, that’s a 14% increase from the previous generation! Horsepower output has also increased by 8%, delivering up to 260 horsepower.
There are some significant changes to the third-generation of this engine to make these numbers possible! Ram outfits the engine with a new-generation water-cooled turbocharger with VGT or variable geometry turbine for enhanced responsiveness and efficiency during transient conditions. The cylinder head intake ports have also been redesigned for improved flow and swirl, also contributing in enhanced fuel economy and performance. Ram also updated the exhaust gas recirculation system to a dual loop, both low and high pressure, system. This draws gases after the diesel particulate filter for increased fuel economy and to minimize turbocharger energy losses.
The high-pressure direct-injection fuel injector nozzles were are also revamped for the third-generation engine to match the newly optimized and designed combustions chamber. Another feature that was completely redesigned for the 2020 model year is the lightweight aluminum alloy pistons which now include a low-friction coating on the pin and side skirts as well as thinner rings to reduce losses. A lightweight sandwiched metal/polymer material in the lower portion of the two-piece oil sump.
The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 utilizes dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) with four valves per cylinder. The engine block is cast with compacted graphite iron which boosts the strength of the engine to dampen vibrations while weighing less than the grey cast iron previously used.
