What Engine Powers the 2025 Ram 1500 RHO?
After the 2024 model year, Ram phased out its V8 engine, opting for more fuel efficiency provided by smaller engines. Replacing the Ram 1500's V8 engines is one Ram is calling Hurricane. The all-new Hurricane engine is a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six engine. By having two fewer cylinders, the Hurricane engine offers better fuel economy than the outgoing V8 engines. Meanwhile, the forced air induction provided by the two turbochargers offers more power than naturally aspirated V8 engines and other boosted six-cylinder engines. The new RHO features the high-output Hurricane engine. This boasts an exciting 540 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque, which increases the Ram 1500's power output from 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque provided by the previous generation's 5.7L V8. The high-output Hurricane engine gives the Ram 1500 RHO an impressive 4.6-second 0-60 time, a top speed of 118 MPH, and a 13.1-second quarter-mile time. The hurricane engine pairs with a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, featuring a performance-inspired floor shifter replacing the standard rotary dial. Additionally, the RHO features steering-wheel paddle shifters for sequential gear shifting. The powertrain used by the RHO is 150 pounds lighter than the one found in Ram's previous performance model, decreasing the power-to-weight ratio for better performance. The transmission sends power to all four wheels with an intelligent four-wheel drive system.
Advanced Powertrain Features for the Ram 1500 RHO
In addition to the RHO's powertrain, Ram also added exclusive features and upgraded driveline components to enhance its performance. An example of an exclusive feature is the high-flow air induction system with a functional hood scoop. This system is designed to drain water and filter out debris to prevent it from reaching the engine, allowing the engine to take in only clean, cool air. Air enters through both the large hood scoop and flow-through 'RAM' lettering on the grille. The air induction system leads to a high-capacity radial air filter housed in an open-top air box. Having an open top allows drivers to clean the air filter quickly while on the trails. Another feature is the new exhaust system. Exclusive to the RHO, this system uses a Sport Tune low-restriction system with dual pipes that run from the front to the rear of the truck, emitting a roar that announces its high-performance spirit. An upgraded driveline component is the BorgWarner 48-13 full-time active transfer case. This is designed to allow drivers to get through any weather conditions or off-road obstructions. It features upgraded internals that improve its durability and overall strength. In 4-Low mode, the RHO features a gear ratio of 2.64:1, allowing for greater control while rock crawling. Finally, the RHO uses a Dana 60 rear axle with full-floating axle shafts accompanied by an electronic locking rear differential. The Dana 60 rear axle uses an axle hop damper that improves axle control to enhance traction on rough terrain. Meanwhile, the locking differential increases control and handling at high speeds by driving both rear wheels as one.
2025 Ram 1500 RHO Drive Modes
The 2025 Ram 1500 RHO is also equipped with a total of nine distinct drive modes to customize and optimize your driving experience. These include Auto, Baja, Mud/Sand, Rock, Tow, Sport, Custom, and Snow, along with a Valet mode. These modes make alterations to the truck's powertrain systems, such as traction control, power output, throttle control, steering feel, suspension stiffness, transfer case gearing, and more. For example, in Baja mode, the rear differential is locked to enhance traction while driving over desert dunes, while the transfer case is shifted into 4-High for high-speed traction. Additionally, the advanced Bilstein e2 Black Hawk shock absorbers are adjusted to help maintain balance. Meanwhile, Rock mode shifts the transfer case into 4-Low for better low-speed crawling control. Meanwhile, Rock mode also adjusts the shocks to allow for greater suspension travel to keep the wheels in contact with the jagged terrain. Sport mode maximizes on-road performance by optimizing the power output and throttle control and raising the transmission shift points, allowing for higher RPMs before shifting. The RHO also features launch control to aid in straight-line acceleration in Sport mode. Custom mode is unique because it allows you to make your own adjustments to the vehicle's systems to give you a one-of-a-kind driving experience tailored to your driving preferences.
